29 Jun

With everyone around the world paying homage to the recently departed Michael Jackson, iconic British designer Paul Smith even showed his love for the King of Pop when his models came out dancing to “Thriller” during the the finale of his S/S ’10 show at Paris Men’s Fashion Week.

Spotted: Anna Sui “Gossip Girl” Collection for Target

26 Jun

TheGossipGirls

Ever since the news broke that Anna Sui was designing a capsule collection for Target centered on the fashion seen on everyone’s favorite Upper East Side teenage drama series, Gossip Girl, we’ve been patiently waiting to see how she was going to interpret the very separate styles of the show’s four leading ladies: Blair, Serena, Jenny, and Vanessa.

Overall, I’d say Anna was more on point with Blair and Jenny, but kind of missed the mark with Serena and Vanessa. Last time I checked Vanessa is not a hippie– she’s a hipster. And all that really had to be done to master Serena’s look is “boobs, boobs, boobs.” That said, here’s a first look at the collection, indexed by character.

The September Issue, Trailer Just In

26 Jun

september_issue_still_04

“September is the ‘January’ of fashion.”

Appropriately slated to release in September, the highly-anticipated documentary takes a behind-the-scenes look at Vogue magazine and its Editor-in-Chief “Madonna” (as described by designer Thakoon) during production of the most important issue of the year.

Warning: This is NOT The Devil Wears Prada. This is the real deal. And the real deal is Anna Wintour– and she is scarier than the Devil. I’m frightened just watching the trailer…

Online Shop Exposed: Shoes and Your Mom

25 Jun

shoes and your mom banner

Normally I would stay very tight-lipped about this one, because I’m obsessed with shoes right now. But since I don’t have the unlimited funds to actually own them all, at least someone I trust should enjoy being able to.

Shoes and Your Mom, a blog created by Lulu Chang of Chictopia fame, is a service allowing both those well-endowed with awesome shoes (and now clothing and accessories as well) to sell them and for people like me to get our paws– or should I say pads– on their former treasures. Offering a wide range of brand new, used, and rare vintage pairs from everyone like Alaia, Chloe, Vivienne Westwood, YSL, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Marni, Miu Miu, Pierre Hardy, Givenchy, Jimmy Choo, and Sigerson Morrison, to more basic brands like L.A.M.B., Seychelles, Steve Madden, Topshop, Nine West, and Aldo– this is a limitless playground for shoe addicts. With constant updates of new merchandise, it’s definitely worth bookmarking and checking on the daily.

Not to mention, you can now purchase a few of my own pairs– freshly listed today! See them all after the jump.

Pleet TV, Cute or On Crack?

24 Jun

samantha-pleet-tv-show-1

So watch this (by clicking on the link in the above photo) and tell me: is this weird, or is this weird?

Basically, designer Samantha Pleet decided to play variety/talk show for a day, invite all her friends over, have them spout off a few non sequiturs, and after which, they then all of a sudden do some awkward posing/dancing for a few seconds while music plays.

The guests– which include chicks like Heather D’Angelo of Au Revoir Simone and Peggy Wang of Pains of Being Pure at Heart– do totally random things like pop up drunk out of a trunk, try to sing Cher, and dance around randomly– all of course, while wearing Samantha’s designs, making it a kind of whacked-out version of a lookbook. The show even has a fake laugh track playing in the background to make it sound like there’s an audience in on the madness. All of it only leads me to believe there was some substance involved in the making of this video (and I don’t mean the coffee that Samantha is holding.)

God Help the Girl

23 Jun

God Help the Girl

I love, love, love Belle & Sebastian (evidenced by the many posters that cover my walls), and from what I’ve heard, I already love B&S frontman Stuart Murdoch’s new female group– God Help the Girl– made up of three beautiful and sweetly-voiced songbirds whose self-titled album releases today, June 23, on Matador Records.

What started as a series of songs written while Stuart was on the “Dear Catastrophe Waitress” tour, he explains: “I was out for a run and I got this tune in my head and it occurred to me that it wasn’t a Belle & Sebastian song. I could hear female voices and strings, I could hear the whole thing, but I just couldn’t envisage myself singing it with the group.” And from there, Stuart decided to look for some fresh, new talent to bring his tracks to life. By posting discrete want ads looking for female singers (specifying “Celine Dion wannabes, save your breath”) as well as hosting an internet contest, he auditioned hopefuls until he settled on his main three: Catherine Ireton, Celia Garcia, and Alex Klobuck (with guest appearances from other singers including Asya from Smoosh). The result is a beautiful album reminiscent of classic pop with that trademark B&S touch, thanks to the band supplying the instrumentals.

To see and hear more, check out a short behind-the-scenes documentary and the two first singles from the album.

Music I’m Feeling: Warpaint

22 Jun

Warpaint3

Hailing from Southern California, this formerly all female lo-fi/ambient/psychedelic indie rock band Warpaint put out their first EP Exquisite Corpse a few months ago– but I’ll admit my ears are just getting around to hearing them now. Since then, they’ve picked up momentum and got signed to a label Manimal Vinyl, under which they’re re-releasing the album this summer while they embark on a West Coast tour. Anyway, they’re definitely on my radar now, and I’m sure they’ll be on everyone else’s soon enough.

Fun Fact: If you thought one of the members looked suspiciously similar to actress Shannyn Sossamon, that’s because vocalist/bassist Jen is her sister. And while Shannyn was the original drummer for the band (now replaced by a guy), she apparently will still appear on stage sometimes with them during random performances.

Click to check out some of their tracks.
