I’d have to say that the upcoming covers for Katie Grand’s LOVE magazine are quite a divergence from their debut– a nude shot of (a whole lotta) Beth Ditto. Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, Issue 3 of the new-mag-on-the-block will offer up eight covers showcasing a handful of different models, including Lara Stone, Natalia Vodianova, Daria Werbowy, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Kristen McMenamy, Janeil Williams, and Amber Valetta. While the point may be to offer up some “diversity” with the multiple covers, I can’t help but think when I look at them side by side that I’m seeing the same image with Photoshopped heads. Is it just me, or do these models’ bodies seem essentially interchangeable? Sure, they all look slamming, but if LOVE is trying to celebrate that whole “Every Body Is Beautiful” message like the most recent V issue, it got kind of lost on me.
Today’s geeks always turn out to be tomorrow’s winners
30 JanA valuable quote from the movie Spring Breakdown I saw on Lifetime today starring Parker Posey, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Amber Tamblyn, and Jane Lynch (and how could I leave out, since she’s on the DVD cover, Kristin Cavallari). Other true and helpful statements from this cinematic masterpiece:
“You know what safe sex is? Dating men who are gay,” or “Everyone knows you can’t spell talent without T-N-A.”
Usually I turn the dial on Lifetime, but due to the cast, I stayed on the couch to see what it was all about. And I can’t say that I regret it, because to be honest, it was kind of hilarious. Sort of like the chick version of The Hangover. Overall, I’d say this movie was a success. A legit way to spend my one day off a week, sitting in front of the tube.

The Perfect Parka
30 JanI always try to get away with wearing cute little coats during the winter. But since I still end up freezing my ass off, it gets to the point where I don’t even want to leave the house at all. And of course, what’s the point of having an awesome coat if no one’s ever going to see it? Because of that, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect parka for god knows how long– so I can balance out the functionality with fashion(ality). I see them on girls all over the city, but I never have the balls to stop and ask where they came from. So, I’ve hit up all the obvious spots: A.P.C., Gap, Topshop, even the Army Navy Store– all to no avail. Besides the fact that winter faked us out and sent us a brief Indian summer, making me think I could stash the heavy coats into the back of the closet, I was ready to give up entirely… until I happened across what can only be accurately described as parka heaven: YesStyle, a Hong Kong-based e-shop. I found dozens that I wanted, but eventually had to to narrow it down to three. And since I’m feeling generous, I’ll share what I scored, and on the cheap, too.

Getting Into the Ankh
24 JanMy staple accessory in ’09 was by far the cross. And no, I’m not Catholic (not even close) but I still rocked it all day, everyday like a god-fearing church-goer. By no means am I saying I’m kicking the crosses to the curb in ’10, but I think I’m going to advance to something a little different, a little fresh for the new year. The ankh. OK– so it kind of looks like a cross anyway, which means it’s going to be an easy transition.
For those who might not know what an ankh is, it’s the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol for life, immortality, health, and happiness– which is all good stuff I could use a major dose of this year. Or maybe some of you recognize it from the ’90s, when people would dawn it on a black leather rope necklace. Either way, I’m going to go ahead and claim this as my first big obsession of the year. Who’s with me? Ankhs unite!
2010 Trend Alert: the “Caesar”
23 JanJust watch. If anyone can bring back ancient Rome’s royal silver-leafed headbands and make it 2010′s next big thing, it’s newcomer singer Coco Sumner (who I’ve posted about before). See her rock it in this new music video if you’re a non-believer.
