DIY Friday: Fringed Shoulder Pads

28 Aug

diyshoulder2

Shoulders are in for Fall– be it pointy, padded, angular, or bare. Yes, we’ve always had shoulders, but not since the ’80s have we wanted to flaunt them so much that we actually revert to using bra cups to make them look bigger. Personally, I was always cutting the shoulder pads out of my mom’s old shirts so that I wouldn’t look like a linebacker, but now I think it could look sleek depending on how you rock them.

Thanks to Elise over at the Danish blog Anywho, you can learn how to make these oh-so-editorial fringed shoulder pads.

DIY Friday: Geometric Necklace

21 Aug

GeoNecklace DIY10

For some reason, this DIY brings me back to my elementary school days of stringing macaroni together on a thread to make funky bead necklaces. But then again, a lot of the fashion right now brings me full circle back to my childhood– yet it all looks a lot cooler now than before. Or maybe I just didn’t realize how cool I was back in the day.

Whatever it is, thanks to ddlai over at Fatlace’s Ladylike, you can learn how to make this geometric bead necklace to wear with all your other “so-hot-right-now” body chain gear.

DIY Friday: Doo.Ri Inspired Embellished Tights

24 Jul

Cocorosa embellished tights main

I came across this cute DIY, which reminisces of the embellished tights seen at the Doo.Ri F/W 09 runway show, from style blogger Cocorosa. And if like her, you enjoy prancing around lower Manhattan in poofy white tutus, these tights are perfect for you, too.

DIY Friday: Alexander Wang Inspired Cut-Out Sweater

Alex Wang Cut-Out Sweater DIY

The Alexander Wang Spring sample sale is this weekend– and I’m literally having to use every ounce of self-restraint to not go and drop an unnecessary wad of cash that I don’t have. That said, I’ll settle for a summer-appropriate Wang-inspired DIY project.

Thanks to the very creative Trang over at Behind the Seams, here’s a cool new piece you can make for your wardrobe (at only a tiny fraction of the price of the real deal).

DIY Friday: Alice Dellal-Inspired Mesh Dress

19 Jun

Alice Dellal mesh dress2

When I picked up the American Apparel black mesh dress the other day, the woman at the counter asked, “How do you plan on wearing this?” Good question. Its obviously too scandalous to wear on its own (unless you don’t mind putting it all out there). But personally, being a bit more conservative-minded, I looked to my best creative options and came across this sweet little DIY inspired by a look worn by Alice Dellal.

DIY Friday: Studded Tights

DIY Studded Tights

I’ve already explained before my obsession with studs on everything that is inanimate. So, of course, I have already attempted creating my own version of the Bebaroque studded tights (pictured above on the left) with some leggings, tiny silver triangular studs, and a bedazzler. While they looked good, the problem was that it hurt to wear them because the back of the studs would constantly scratch my legs from the inside. And while I’m willing to suffer a little in the name of fashion, that one just wasn’t worth it. Luckily, this DIY has got it right– less time-consuming and no pain involved.

Thanks to the MidWasteland, here you go!

DIY Friday: Diamond-Cut Leggings

5 Jun

rodartediy

I’ve been seeing these Rodarte leggings everywhere lately– on models, Rihanna, and even Karen O on the newest cover of Nylon. Since I know Rodarte doesn’t come cheap (we’re talking $920), I knew that a DIY would be on the blogosphere soon enough. And of course, I was right. You can thank the party girls over at Six Six Sick for this one.

DIY: Fringe Zipper Necklace

30 May

diy fringe necklace

I love tackling DIY projects. When studs first hit the runways seasons ago, I reveled in being able to purchase a Bedazzler (something I always wanted but never had as a kid) and went on a frenzy studding everything I owned until my fingers were bleeding.

So it goes without saying that when I came across a DIY incorporating two of my current loves– fringe and zippers– on Lucky Magazine’s blog, I kind of choked a little.

I plan to dedicate my day tomorrow to making this. You should too. Click to see step-by-step the instructions.
